ToolistHub Split PDF page on a phone screen, with a Drop your PDF here upload area, a Select PDF File button and a 4 MB limit

You can split a PDF in your phone's browser in a few taps, with no app to install: open ToolistHub's free Split PDF tool in Safari or Chrome, upload a PDF of up to 4 MB, choose how to cut it and download the result. It works the same way on iPhone and Android, and you don't need an account.

The PDF is uploaded to ToolistHub's server, split there and sent back to your phone as a download. The part that usually trips people up comes afterwards: finding the new files and opening them when they arrive as a ZIP. Both are covered below.

How to split a PDF on your phone, step by step

  1. Open the tool. Go to ToolistHub's Split PDF page in Safari on an iPhone or in Chrome on Android.
  2. Pick your PDF. Tap Select PDF File and choose the file from Files, Downloads or wherever you saved it. A PDF larger than 4 MB is refused before it uploads.
  3. Enter the password if asked. For a protected PDF, type the password and tap Submit Password. You type it only once, because the split reuses it.
  4. Check the page previews. On a phone held upright, thumbnails of the first 24 pages appear one below the other, so scroll past them to reach the options. If they don't load, you can still split the PDF.
  5. Choose a split method. Under Split Options, tap By Page Range, Into Equal Parts, Every N Pages, All Individual Pages or, when the PDF has bookmarks, By Bookmarks. Then fill in the box that appears, if there is one.
  6. Pick the Output Format. Leave ZIP Archive selected, or choose Individual Files if you want a single PDF back (see below).
  7. Tap Split PDF. The button sits at the bottom of the tool.
  8. Tap Download Results. It appears just above the Split PDF button when the files are ready.

By Page Range for a few pages

By Page Range is the quickest choice when you only need part of a document, such as the one page a job portal asks for. Use a hyphen for a range and a comma between entries. Typing 1-3, 7 gives you two PDFs, one with pages 1 to 3 and one with page 7, because every comma-separated entry becomes its own file. The guide on how to split a PDF by page range covers the format in more detail.

Which split method works best on a small screen

Typing on a phone keyboard is slow, so pick the method that needs the least input for the job.

All Individual Pages when every page must be its own file

All Individual Pages needs nothing typed at all: every page comes back as a separate PDF. It suits a form that a portal wants one page at a time, or a set of certificates that each go to a different person. With several pages, the files arrive together in one ZIP.

Every N Pages, Into Equal Parts and By Bookmarks

Each of these needs one number at most:

  • Every N Pages: type a number such as 2 and the PDF is cut into files of two pages each. Any pages left over go into a shorter last file.
  • Into Equal Parts: type how many files you want, such as 3, and the pages are shared between them as evenly as possible.
  • By Bookmarks: shown only when the PDF has bookmarks. It makes one file per top-level bookmark, often one per chapter, with nothing to type.

Where the split files go on your phone

Your phone saves the result like any other download. A ZIP is named after your PDF with _split added, so report.pdf gives you report_split.zip, which makes it easy to spot in a list.

iPhone: Safari's Downloads list and the Files app

Right after the download, tap the Downloads button next to Safari's search field, then tap Downloads to see the file. Later, open the Files app, tap Browse, then iCloud Drive, then the Downloads folder. Apple's guide to finding downloads shows both routes.

Android: Chrome's Downloads and your Files app

In Chrome, tap More (the three dots at the top right), then Downloads. If your address bar is at the bottom of the screen, swipe up on it and tap Downloads. To see everything you've downloaded, open the Files app, as Google's Chrome Help page explains.

How to open the ZIP file on iPhone or Android

A ZIP is a single file that holds several others, so open it before you try to attach or upload the PDFs inside.

  • iPhone: in the Files app, tap the ZIP. A folder containing the files is created; tap the folder to open it. Apple describes this in its guide to ZIP files on iPhone.
  • Android: in Files by Google, select the .zip file, tap Extract, then tap Done. The PDFs are saved in the same folder as the ZIP, and only .zip archives are supported, according to Files by Google Help. Other file manager apps may label these steps differently.

Once the PDFs are out of the ZIP, you can attach them to an email, upload them to a portal or send them on WhatsApp like any other file.

Get one PDF instead of a ZIP

If you only need one new file, you can skip the unzipping. Choose By Page Range, type a single entry such as 2-4, and set Output Format to Individual Files. When the split makes exactly one file, it downloads as a PDF. In every other case, including the default ZIP Archive setting, you get a ZIP.

Limits to know before you split a PDF on your phone

  • 4 MB per PDF. Larger files are refused before they upload.
  • 500 pages at most. A longer PDF is more than the tool can split at once.
  • Previews for the first 24 pages. Longer documents still split; you just won't see thumbnails beyond page 24.
  • Results over about 4 MB are refused. If the files you ask for add up to more than that, the tool tells you and suggests fewer or smaller parts.
  • Scans stay images. A PDF made from a scan or from photos splits normally, but ToolistHub can't make its text selectable.
  • A temporary copy on the server. Your upload and its previews sit in a temporary folder, and a cleanup clears out anything older than 15 minutes. Nothing is kept permanently, but it isn't instant either.

Before you upload anything sensitive, read ToolistHub's privacy policy, which explains how each tool handles your files.
