Split PDF into Individual Pages: One PDF per Page, Free
Need every page of a document as a separate file? When one PDF per page beats page ranges, what the files are called, and what to do if the result is too big.

To split PDF into individual pages, upload the file to ToolistHub's free Split PDF tool, choose All Individual Pages and download one ZIP that holds a separate PDF for every page. A 12-page document gives you 12 one-page files, with nothing to type and no account to create. It takes PDFs of up to 4 MB, though a long document may have to be split in rounds, as explained below.
Each page is copied into its new file as it is, so text and images look the same as in the original, and your original PDF stays unchanged.
How to split a PDF into individual pages
- Open Split PDF and click Select PDF File, or drag the PDF onto the upload area. Files can be up to 4 MB.
- If the PDF is password-protected, type the password and choose Submit Password. You enter it only once.
- Check the page previews to make sure you uploaded the right document. They show the first 24 pages.
- Under Split Options, choose All Individual Pages. There is no box to fill in.
- Leave Output Format on ZIP Archive. With more than one page, the result is a ZIP either way.
- Choose Split PDF, then Download Results.
What you get when you split PDF into individual pages
The download is a single ZIP named after your file with _split added, so payslips.pdf becomes payslips_split.zip. Inside are the page files, one PDF per page, each containing just that page.
How the page files are named
Each file takes the original name, then _page_ and the page number:
- payslips_page_1.pdf
- payslips_page_2.pdf
- payslips_page_3.pdf, and so on up to the last page
The numbers follow the PDF's own page order, starting at 1, so a cover page counts as page 1. They aren't padded with zeros, so a file list sorted by name can show page_10 before page_2; go by the number at the end of each name. Rename the files once they are unzipped if the people receiving them need clearer names, such as Payslip-March-Sara.pdf.
Opening the ZIP on a computer or phone
- Windows: right-click the ZIP, choose Extract All and follow the steps, as Microsoft's guide to zipping and unzipping files shows.
- Mac: double-click the ZIP, and the unzipped item appears in the same folder, according to Apple's Mac User Guide.
- iPhone: tap the ZIP in the Files app to unpack it into a folder, as Apple's guide to ZIP files on iPhone shows.
- Android: select the ZIP in Files by Google and tap Extract, as Files by Google Help explains.
Individual pages or page ranges: which do you need?
Every page as its own file
Choose All Individual Pages when every page has its own destination: each receipt goes into a separate expense claim, each certificate goes to a different student, or a portal accepts only one page per upload. One choice handles the whole document.
Only a few pages: use page ranges instead
If you need pages 3, 8 and 12 rather than all of them, choose By Page Range and type 3, 8, 12. Each comma-separated entry becomes its own PDF, so you get three single-page files instead of a ZIP full of pages you don't need. The guide on how to split a PDF by page range explains the format in detail.
Common jobs that need one file per page
- A stack of receipts or forms: if you scanned them into one PDF, split it so each receipt or form can be named, filed or submitted on its own.
- Upload portals: some job, university and government portals ask for each page in a separate upload field, such as the two sides of an ID card or each page of a transcript.
- Documents for different people: certificates, payslips or invoices for several people in one PDF can be split and sent to each person separately.
Payslips, invoices and ID documents carry personal details. ToolistHub keeps your upload and its page previews in a temporary folder, and a cleanup clears out anything older than 15 minutes, so nothing stays there permanently, though it isn't instant. On a Mac, you can avoid uploading them with the offline method below. ToolistHub's privacy policy explains how each tool handles your files.
If the split fails or the result is too large
- The PDF is over 4 MB: ToolistHub can't take files that large. On a Mac, use Preview instead, as described in the next section.
- It has more than 500 pages: that is more than the tool can split at once, so it refuses the file.
- The result is too large: All Individual Pages makes a file for every page, and together they can come to more than the tool can send back, which is about 4 MB. Each page file carries its own copy of things like fonts, so the total can be larger than the original. The tool tells you when this happens and suggests fewer or smaller parts.
- A password problem: if the split says the password is missing or wrong, type it in the PDF Password box that appears and choose Split PDF again.
- Pages made from a scan: they split normally, but each page stays an image, and ToolistHub can't turn it into selectable text.
When the result is too large, split the document in rounds with By Page Range. Type 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 for the first round, then 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and so on: each comma-separated entry becomes its own one-page PDF. Every round numbers its files from part_1 again, so unzip each round into its own folder and rename the files before you mix them.
Free offline ways to save each page separately
If the PDF is over 4 MB or you would rather not upload it, a Mac can do the job without any website. Open the PDF in Preview, choose View > Thumbnails, and drag a page's thumbnail from the sidebar to the desktop: Apple's Preview guide says this creates a new PDF. Repeat it for each page you need.
It's slower than All Individual Pages for a long document, but the file never has to go online.
