To rotate a PDF and save it, open ToolistHub's free Rotate PDF tool, add the PDF, turn the pages with Rotate left or Rotate right, then select Apply changes and download the new copy. The rotation is saved in the PDF itself, so the pages stay turned in any PDF reader. Rotate PDF works in your browser, so your file is not uploaded.

Why the rotation didn't stick

If a page turns back to its old position the next time you open the file, the rotation was applied to your screen, not saved in the PDF. That is what happens when a reader only rotates the view. To fix the page for everyone you send the file to, the rotation has to be written into the PDF, which is what Rotate PDF does.

How to rotate a PDF and save it

  1. Open Rotate PDF. Go to the Rotate PDF page on your computer or in your phone's browser.
  2. Add your PDF. Select Choose a PDF file, or drop the PDF on the drop area. A small preview of every page appears.
  3. Turn a page. Under its preview, Rotate left turns the page 90 degrees anticlockwise and Rotate right 90 degrees clockwise. The preview turns with it.
  4. Or turn several pages. Tick the pages and use Left or Right next to Selected pages, or turn every page with Left or Right next to Rotate all pages.
  5. Select Apply changes. Undo all changes puts every page back first, if you change your mind.
  6. Download the PDF. The new copy is named after your file with -rotated added. Your original file isn't changed.

How many turns does a page need?

A page that reads sideways needs one turn, to the left or the right, depending on which way it lies. An upside-down page needs two turns in either direction. Check the previews before you apply the change: they show each page the way it will be saved.

If most pages are sideways, turn them all with Rotate all pages, then turn back the few that were already right.

What stays the same

Rotating changes only each page's rotation setting. Pages are not redrawn or compressed, so text stays selectable and images keep their quality. Links, bookmarks, form fields and the document's title and author are kept, and each turn adds to the rotation a page already had.

Because the PDF is saved again, a digital signature in it will no longer be valid, so keep the signed original.

Limits to know

  • One PDF of up to 50 MB and 1,000 pages at a time.
  • Encrypted PDFs can't be rotated, including password-protected PDFs and PDFs that open without a password but restrict editing or printing. Save an unprotected copy first, then rotate that.

Rotate pages on a Mac with Preview

Preview on a Mac can rotate pages too: click the Rotate Left tool, or hold Option and click the Rotate Right tool, and select several pages in the thumbnails first to turn them together. Apple explains it in its guide to cropping or rotating a PDF in Preview. Save the PDF afterwards to keep the change.

To put the pages in a new order as well, or to remove some, use Organize PDF, which rotates, reorders and deletes pages in one place, or Delete PDF Pages for removing pages only.

Frequently asked questions

How do I rotate a PDF and save it permanently?

Turn the pages in Rotate PDF, select Apply changes and download the new copy. The rotation is saved in the file, so every PDF reader shows the pages turned.

How do I rotate just one page in a PDF?

Use the Rotate left or Rotate right button under that page's preview, then select Apply changes. The other pages stay as they were.

Can I rotate a PDF on my phone?

Yes, in your phone's web browser: tap Rotate left or Rotate right under a page, then Apply changes and Download PDF. A very large PDF may need more memory than a phone has.

Does rotating a PDF reduce its quality?

No. Rotate PDF only changes each page's rotation setting, so text and images are not redrawn or compressed.

Conclusion

To keep a rotation for good, turn the pages in Rotate PDF, apply the changes and download the copy: the rotation is stored in the file, and the pages keep their quality.
