ToolistHub PDF to Word with resume.pdf selected, Hybrid Editable as the Conversion Strategy and a Convert to Word button

To turn your resume PDF to Word, upload it to ToolistHub's free PDF to Word converter, keep the default Hybrid Editable mode and download the .docx. Then check the layout before you edit: the text converts, but columns, sidebars and tables come out as plain paragraphs. It works for CVs of up to 4 MB that have selectable text, and you don't need to sign up.

How to convert your resume PDF to Word

  1. Open ToolistHub's PDF to Word converter and choose Upload from PC or Mobile.
  2. Pick your CV. Only PDFs of up to 4 MB are accepted.
  3. Leave Advanced Settings on Hybrid Editable, the default. Visual Fidelity turns each page into a picture, which is no use for updating a CV.
  4. Choose Convert to Word, then Download Word File. The file is named after your PDF with _converted added, such as resume_converted.docx.
  5. Open the .docx in Word or another editor, and save a copy under a new name before you change anything.

Check your CV PDF before you convert it

  • Can you select its text? Open the PDF and try to highlight a line. If nothing highlights, the CV is an image, such as a scan or a photo saved as a PDF, and the converter refuses it with a message that the PDF has no selectable text. You'll need to retype it or use a tool that reads text from images.
  • Is it password-protected? A CV that needs a password to open can't be converted: the conversion stops with an error. Use a copy without the password. A PDF that opens normally but restricts copying or editing converts as usual.
  • Is it under 4 MB? A CV with a large photo can go over the limit, and larger files are refused before they upload.

What to check after converting your resume

ToolistHub's editable mode rebuilds your CV as a simple Word document: each block of text becomes a paragraph, one after another, on US Letter pages with 1-inch margins. Work through the four areas below. For problems that can affect any PDF, such as odd spacing or missing images, see why a PDF won't convert to Word properly.

Columns, sidebars and text boxes

Columns aren't rebuilt, so a two-column CV comes out as one column. The sidebar text, such as contact details, skills and languages, appears above or below the main text in the order it was stored in the PDF, which isn't always the order you read it. Move each section where you want it, or recreate the two columns with a table in Word.

Tables and skill grids

Tables are not rebuilt as Word tables: their text arrives as separate paragraphs, without borders. Skill bars, rating dots, lines and coloured boxes that were drawn as shapes don't come across at all, so a skills grid can turn into a plain list of words. Rewrite it as a short list, or insert a new table in Word.

Fonts, bullet points and spacing

  • Fonts: each piece of text keeps its font name, size and bold, but not italics or colour, so coloured headings turn black. Sizes are rounded down to whole points, so 10.5 pt text becomes 10 pt. If a font isn't installed on your device, Word shows a substitute, so switching the whole CV to one common font is often the quickest fix.
  • Bullet points: a bullet typed as the • character comes through as a plain character, not as a Word bulleted list. Bullets set in a symbol font are usually dropped, and bullets drawn as shapes don't come across at all. Rebuild the list with Word's bullet list button.
  • Line breaks: lines that sat in one block of the PDF are joined into one paragraph, so an address or a row of skills can run together. Press Enter where you want the breaks back.
  • Alignment: short centred lines, such as your name, stay centred, but everything else is left-aligned, including dates that sat on the right.
  • Page size: if you print or apply on A4 paper, change the page size to A4 in Word before you fix the spacing.

Your photo and icons

Images such as a profile photo or a logo are placed in the flow of the text at their original size, up to the width of the text, rather than beside your name. Move the photo back into place, or remove it if the job ad doesn't ask for one. Icons for phone, email or LinkedIn come through when they were images in the PDF. Icons drawn as shapes don't come across, and icons set in an icon font are usually dropped too, so add them back in Word or use plain labels such as Phone and Email.

Update, polish and save your CV

  • Update the content first: add the new job, course or skill, and cut anything out of date.
  • Reword bullet points carefully: paste one bullet point at a time into the Sentence Rewriter, choose Concise or Formal, and compare the versions it generates. It sends your text to Google's Gemini API and can make mistakes, so check every line, keep only what is true and leave personal details out of what you paste. The guide on how to improve sentence structure has more ways to tighten your wording.
  • Save it as a PDF from Word: choose File > Save a Copy (or Save As), then pick PDF, as Microsoft's steps for saving as a PDF show. Sending a PDF means the recruiter sees the layout you fixed.
  • Use a clear file name, such as Firstname-Lastname-CV.pdf, rather than resume_converted.pdf.

When rebuilding your CV is faster than fixing it

Converting saves the most time on a simple, one-column CV that is mostly text. Rebuilding is often quicker in these cases:

  • A complex design: two columns, a coloured sidebar, skill bars or lots of icons all need redoing by hand.
  • You still have the original: if the CV came from a design app or an online template, edit it there and export a new PDF.
  • No text to convert: a scan or photo of a CV can't be turned into editable text, so retype it or use a tool that reads text from images.
  • A fresh start: if you want a new design anyway, paste the converted text into a new template one section at a time.

Keep your personal details private

A CV holds your phone number, email address and work history. ToolistHub's PDF to Word converter uploads the file to its server and converts it within a single request, in a temporary folder that is deleted before the Word file is sent back to you. If you would rather not upload your CV to a website and you have Microsoft Word, let Word open the PDF: choose File > Open, pick the PDF, and Word makes an editable copy while the original stays unchanged. Microsoft's guide to editing a PDF in Word says this works best with PDFs that are mostly text.

Frequently asked questions

How can I convert my PDF resume to Word?

Upload it to ToolistHub's PDF to Word converter, keep Hybrid Editable, choose Convert to Word and download the .docx. Then check the columns, tables, bullets and photo before you start editing.

How do I edit a PDF resume in Word?

In Microsoft Word, choose File > Open and pick the PDF: Word makes an editable copy, which Microsoft's guide says works best for PDFs that are mostly text. You can also convert it to a .docx with ToolistHub's PDF to Word converter first. Either way, check the layout, bullets and page size, then save it as a PDF from Word.

Can I convert a CV PDF to Word for free?

Yes. ToolistHub's converter is free, needs no sign-up and is supported by ads. It handles CVs of up to 4 MB that have selectable text, but not scans or PDFs that need a password to open.

How do I edit a PDF resume on iPhone?

Open ToolistHub's PDF to Word converter in Safari, upload the CV from the Files app and download the .docx, which goes to the Downloads folder in Files, as Apple's guide to finding downloads explains. Open it in an app that edits Word documents; the layout fixes are easier on a computer if you have one.

Conclusion

Converting your CV from PDF gives you an editable draft in a minute; most of the time goes into checking it. Use ToolistHub's free PDF to Word converter for a text-based CV, work through the four areas above, and rebuild instead when the design is complex.
