How to Compress a PDF to 200 KB for Online Forms

Forms that cap uploads at 100, 200 or 500 KB: the order of steps that usually gets a scanned PDF under the limit, and what to do when it still won't fit.

ToolistHub Compress PDF page with a Choose a PDF file button and the Normal and Strong options

To compress a PDF to 200 KB, start with ToolistHub's free Compress PDF: add the file, choose Strong and Low, select Compress PDF and check the new size it shows. Compress PDF can't aim at an exact size, so if the file is still too big, remove pages or rebuild it from smaller images, as described below. It works in your browser, so the PDF is not uploaded.

How to compress a PDF to 200 KB

Step 1: compress the PDF

  1. Add the PDF to Compress PDF with Choose a PDF file. It takes one PDF of up to 50 MB.
  2. Try Normal and Low first. Normal keeps the text selectable and saves photos and scans again as smaller JPEGs.
  3. If that isn't enough, choose Strong and Low. Strong turns every page into one JPEG image, which shrinks scans the most. The text can then no longer be selected or searched, and links and form fields are removed. Strong works on PDFs of up to 200 pages.
  4. Check the size shown after compressing. If the copy isn't at least 1% smaller, your original is kept instead.

Step 2: remove what the form doesn't need

Every page adds to the size. If the form wants one certificate, not the whole file, remove the other pages with Delete PDF Pages, then compress again. If the form accepts several files, Split PDF can cut a PDF of up to 4 MB into parts.

Step 3: rebuild a scanned PDF from smaller images

When a PDF is made of photos or scans of pages, you can rebuild it from images that already meet a size:

  1. Compress each page image to a size in KB with the Image Compressor, for example 50 KB for each of four pages.
  2. Put the images into one PDF with JPG to PDF, which copies JPG photos into the PDF without compressing them again.

The PDF then comes out at roughly the total size of its images, so you can plan the limit page by page.

Why some PDFs won't go under 200 KB

  • Many pages: even small pages add up. Remove the ones the form doesn't ask for.
  • High-resolution scans: a page scanned for printing holds far more pixels than a form needs. Strong mode at Low quality reduces them.
  • Text-only PDFs are usually small already, so there is little left to remove.

Frequently asked questions

Can I compress a PDF to 100 KB?

Often, yes, with the same steps: Strong mode at Low quality, fewer pages, or a PDF rebuilt from images of about 25 KB each. A long PDF may not fit, whatever the tool.

Will the text still be selectable?

In Normal mode, yes. Strong mode turns pages into images, so the text can't be selected or searched afterwards.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. Compress PDF works in your browser with the open-source pdf-lib and PDF.js libraries, so the file stays on your device.

Conclusion

To get a PDF under 200 KB, compress it in Compress PDF with Strong and Low, remove pages the form doesn't need, and for scans, rebuild the PDF from images you have already compressed to a size in KB.
