Background Remover with a potted succulent photo added and the White colour circle selected, ready to remove the background

You can change photo background to white for free with ToolistHub's Background Remover: upload a JPG, PNG or WebP photo, click Remove Background, choose White in the colour circles and download the result as a JPG or PNG. It needs no sign-up and works for portraits, CV photos and objects.

The tool sends your photo to the remove.bg service (Kaleido AI) to cut out the subject, then puts the white background behind it. Photos can be up to 4 MB.

How to change photo background to white

  1. Add your photo. Open the Background Remover and click Start from a photo, or drop it onto the upload box.
  2. Click Remove Background. Your subject appears on its own in the Background Removed box.
  3. Choose White. The colour circles appear above your photo as soon as you add it. White is the third circle, after Transparent and Light Gray; hover over a circle to see its name.
  4. Download. The green Download button saves a PNG with the white background. For a JPG or WebP file, open Download As and pick the format.
  5. Check the edges at full size before you use the photo (more on that below).

If you open the Background panel, the colour circles disappear. Click Solid Colors in the toolbar to bring them back.

If a photo from an iPhone is refused, it may be saved in Apple's HEIF format, which the tool does not accept (it takes JPG, PNG and WebP). Apple explains how to switch the camera to Most Compatible so that new photos are saved as JPEG.

The JPG shortcut to a white background

JPG files cannot store transparency. So if you leave the colour on Transparent and choose Download As, then JPG, the tool fills the empty area with pure white (#FFFFFF). You get the same result as choosing White, and it saves a click.

PNG and WebP downloads stay transparent when Transparent is selected, so choose White first if you need a white PNG. If you need a see-through version as well, our guide to creating a transparent background PNG explains when that format is the better choice.

Pure white, light grey or another plain colour

White and Light Gray

White is #FFFFFF. Light Gray (#F5F5F5) is a very pale grey that looks almost white. With a white shirt, white hair or a white product it may show a slightly clearer edge, so if your subject is light, download both versions and compare them side by side.

Blue and the other preset colours

The other circles are Black, Blue (#0052FF), Pink, Yellow and a multicolour Gradient. There is no custom colour picker, so if a form or a client asks for an exact shade, check that one of these presets matches before you rely on the tool.

Passport and ID photos: check the rules before you edit

Official photos are the exception. The UK government's rules for digital passport photos say the photo must be taken "against a plain light-coloured background" and must be "unaltered by computer software". Swapping the background, even for plain white, is an alteration, so a UK passport photo has to be retaken rather than edited.

The same page notes that photos from a booth or shop are more likely to be approved than one taken on your own device. Rules differ by country and by document, so check the official guidance from whoever issues your passport or ID before you edit anything. If it asks for an unedited photo, retake it against a plain, light wall.

The Background Remover also does not crop or resize photos to passport dimensions, so on its own it cannot produce a finished ID photo, even where editing is allowed.

Tips for a clean white-background photo

Light and contrast with hair and clothes

The cut-out is only as clean as the photo you start with. Light your subject evenly from the front, so there are no deep shadows that could be mistaken for background, and stand a little away from the wall behind you.

Contrast helps the edges: dark hair against a light wall, or a light object on a darker surface, gives a cleaner outline than white against white. Loose strands of hair are hard to cut out neatly, so smooth them down if you can.

Check the edges at full size before you use it

Open the downloaded file and zoom in until you see the real pixels. Look around hair, fingers, glasses and the gaps between arms and body for leftover patches of the old background or a coloured fringe.

If the edges look rough, retake the photo with more contrast rather than fighting the cut-out. For shop listings, our guide to background removers with no watermark has a section on preparing product photos.

Frequently asked questions

How do I change a photo background to white for free?

Upload the photo to ToolistHub's Background Remover, click Remove Background, choose White in the colour circles and download it. It is free with no account, and photos can be JPG, PNG or WebP files of up to 4 MB.

Can I edit the background of a passport photo?

Not for a UK passport: the rules require a photo that is unaltered by computer software. Other countries set their own rules, so check the official guidance for your document first, and retake the photo against a plain, light background if editing is not allowed.

How do I change a photo background to white in JPG format?

After Remove Background, either choose White and then Download As, JPG, or leave the background on Transparent and download as JPG. The tool fills transparent areas with white, because JPG has no transparency.

How do I change a photo background to white on iPhone?

Open the Background Remover in Safari, tap Start from a photo and choose the picture from your library, then tap Remove Background, tap the White circle and download. On a phone the toolbar shows icons only; the wand icon brings back the colour circles.

Get a clean white background in a few clicks

Cut out the subject, choose White or use the JPG shortcut, and check the edges at full size. Official ID photos are the one case where retaking beats editing. When you are ready, open the free Background Remover and try it with your own photo.
